The word Alternative in the phrase, Alternative energy is acting as an adjective modifying the noun energy. It is not to be understood as a noun in and of its self, as in an alternative to energy.
And we won't get into the ever so thorny issue of whether the word alternate rather than alternative is best applied for this use.
Suffice it to say, Mr. Delingpole's command of The Queen's is as fuct as his politics.
Shame about the man's enlarged liver. Otherwise, not too bad.
