Why not just keep them unplugged? If you never plug it in, it never requires charging from the eeeevil power companies. When the battery dies just throw it out and buy a new one. IT'S FOR TEH CHILDREN!!1!!!ELEVENTY!!1
The moronicity goes far beyond the electrical issue. There's a vast amount of material to be read that is 1) private/confidential
2) existed long before the digital era and will likely never be scanned
3)needs to be 'read' in large format.
For those reasons, and I'm sure many more, digital readers are not required, desired, or practical.
